The best example of a two way course is the Old Course at Saint Andrews, which is still played in the reverse direction on occasion.
In this example, an existing defunct 18-hole "executive" length par 60 course is reconfigured with nine greens that can be played at a par of 35 in two different directions.
Any well designed green will have two or more places where surface drainage exits the green, creating the potential for different approaches and strategies.
The direction of play can be changed day to day or an entire 72 player field can be shotgunned and then reversed after completing nine holes.
